Chairman's Corner

We’re just a couple of months into the year, and there has been plenty of activity to report on.

The biggest event for the year of course was the Final Leg. The 2019 Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg was held in the United Arab Emirates in March. A team of 122 members from 24 countries travelled through each of the seven emirates before delivering the Flame of Hope to the Opening Ceremony of the Special Olympics World Games at the Zayed Sports City Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Thursday, 14 March.

Of the 24 nations represented, I need to recognize Croatia and Peru who participated for the first time as well as Switzerland and Latvia who were part of the Final Leg for just the second time. We hope to see all four programs represented again at the next Final Leg in 2021!

On that note, Special Olympics made two announcements earlier this year about future World Games. In 2021, the World Winter Games will be hosted by Sweden, and in 2023, the World Games will be held in Germany. Our preparations for the 2021 LETR Final Leg are already underway. Lighting the Way to Inclusion

For nearly 40 years, members of law enforcement around the world have been the biggest supporters of Special Olympics as members of the Law Enforcement Torch Run. What started as a small local fundraiser in Wichita, Kansas has grown to be the largest public awareness vehicle and grassroots fundraiser for Special Olympics, providing opportunities for athletes to empower and transform themselves, their communities and the world.
